Claude Code Introduces Weekly Usage Limits: What You Need to Know

    Anıl SoyluJuly 28, 2025
Due to rapid growth in usage of Claude Code and its subscription services, the Anthropic team has made new policy decisions. As announced via email, starting August 28, weekly usage limits will be introduced for some users. In this article, we explain the reasons behind this change, what it means, and how it may impact user experience.

    Why Weekly Limits?
Claude Code has attracted a large user base, particularly through features included in its subscription plans. However, certain policy violations have been observed:
    • Account sharing and reselling of access
    • Running Claude continuously in the background (24/7 usage via automation)
Such advanced usage patterns prevent the system from being used efficiently and fairly across the user base. The introduction of weekly limits aims to reduce these issues and offer a more stable experience for everyone.

    What’s Changing?
    Current Policy:
    • 5-hour usage limit per user (resets every 5 hours)
    New Policy (Effective August 28):
    • The 5-hour rolling limit will remain
    • In addition, a weekly total usage limit will be introduced, resetting every 7 days
    • Claude Opus 4 will also be subject to a weekly limit

What Does This Mean for Users?
    • More than 95% of users will not be affected by this change, as the weekly limits are set based on typical daily usage
    • Pro subscribers will be able to use Claude Code between 40–80 hours per week, depending on factors such as project size and settings like auto-accept
    • Users who run multiple instances of Claude Code in parallel may reach their limits more quickly
    • Subscriptions can be managed or canceled at any time via the settings menu

    What to Expect Going Forward
The Anthropic team continues to monitor usage trends and may adjust limits based on community needs. They are also working on alternative solutions to better support long-term or high-volume usage.

    Performance Issues and Support
The team is aware of recent performance and reliability issues reported by users and is actively working to resolve them. Further improvements are expected in the coming days.

    Conclusion
Anthropic’s decision to implement usage limits is a key step toward maintaining a balanced and sustainable user experience for Claude subscribers. While the majority of users will not experience any restrictions, advanced users may benefit from reassessing their usage habits.
